HIKING, FISHING Superb mountain scenery, blocks of indigenous forest and an extensive grass-covered plateau make Amatola Forest well worth a visit. Hikers have a good chance of seeing common duiker, bushbuck, samango monkey (their loud 'jack' call is frequently heard), baboon and rock dassie. This area is also the home of the nocturnal tree dassie, and, although its blood-curdling screams carry through the forest after dark, the animal is not often seen. Two rare amphibians - the Hogsback frog and the Amatola toad - find refuge here. The birdlife is particularly rich, and a number of rarities, such as the crowned eagle and narina trogon, may be spotted. The Amatola Forest area receives a high annual rainfall (up to 2 000 mm), most of which falls during the summer months. Mist is common at this time. Location: South-central area of the province; north-west of Bisho. Access: From Bisho follow the R63 west-wards in the direction of Fort Beaufort for 24 km and then turn right onto the R352 to Keiskammahoek. The reserve is clearly sign-posted for this settlement and is approached on graded gravel roads. Accommodation: 5 trail lodges Other facilities: Hiking trails varying in length from 1 to 6 days (booking is essential), trout fishing (permit is required). Open: Throughout the year Opening time: 24 hours
